The main objectives of 4KET4Reuse project are the validation of four Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) for the elimination of emerging contaminants (CEs) in treatment plant effluents and their promotion in the SUDOE space market, breaking the barriers between the research and the water sector, and promoting job creation. The three participating regions and the technologies they provide are:
- Andalusia (Spain), with modified clay filtration systems (nanomaterials) and bioelectrogenic systems.
- Languedoc-Roussillon (France), with a system based on photocatalysis.
- Lisbon (Portugal), with a system based on the electrokinetic process.
The sustainability of the system is based on the recovery of both urban and industrial wastewater and thus achieving equilibrium in the water balance. This is not only a local problem, but it is a common challenge for all participating regions. On the other hand, the development of these technological solutions will enable the participating regions to position themselves at the forefront of innovation in water treatment and elimination of ECs. The 4KET4Reuse project wants the knowledge generated not to be retained in the academy, but to penetrate the market of the participating regions, for example through spin-offs or start-ups and therefore having a direct economic impact on the population. This is an essential aspect, especially in regions such as Andalusia, with unemployment rates of 36% (more than 50% unemployment among young people under 25) where it is necessary to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.
